gifted hands on netflix instant stream

If you know anything about Trevy’s story…then you won’t be surprized to learn that Gifted Hands is on our family’s must watch list.  Although Dr. Carson is not an advocate for Infantile Spasms and Hemispherectomies…his work blazed an extraordinary trail.  Down which our family would eventually tread.

And you have no idea how excited I was seeing it nestled among the other newly added instant stream options on Netflix!

If you haven’t watched it and you have even a smithereen of interest…

I say go pop some corn.  And snuggle in.  After all, it’s summer tv season.  What else is there worth watching right now?!

netflix-ing

I knew the kids would love this movie because they’re very into mysterious things right now.  But I was not prepared to love it too!  Such a wonderful wonderful movie with a great story line and even better take home point!  Beautiful scenery too…being set in Ireland.  Reminded me that I once dreamed of visiting Ireland for my 20 anniversary!  I highly recommend adding Secret of the Cave to your instant que!

Another goodie!  Especially with it being baseball season right now.  Based on a true story and set in Mexico (geography…are ya with me moms? Winking smile).

Great for girly girls!

his 5th Grade workboxes

We’re still using and loving our file totes from Walmart.

sesame place and toby's new workbox system 006

And while I do have a school/therapy room.  Toby prefers to do his work in the dining room.  And really, I can’t blame him.  It’s always so warm and cheery in the mornings.

homeschool and backyard therapy 006

He’s almost finished with his Saxon 5/4 book.  Only a handful of lessons to go.

He does really good with Saxon…but fractions will mess with anyone’s head.  We’ve had some fraction drama lately.

I found a great video that I think helped him wrap his mind around how to find the common denominator.  Plus, we’re reviewing ALEKS and after the initial griping (he’s not a fan of new or change) he’s really starting to like it.  I’m a meanie, and make him do his whole Saxon lesson plus one skill from each sections of his ALEKS pie.

phases of the moon 002

We just wrapped up our study of the moon in Apologia’s Exploring Astronomy.  Next stop…Mars!

It cracks me up that Bristel is always in her robe!  Daddy is stingy with the heat! Winking smile

I just started giving him writing assignments this year.  Last year writing was his nemesis.  So I was letting it go for a while and focusing instead on his grammar.  ACE has been SUCH a wonderful fit for his grammar!  No more tears!

And now I think he’s ready to be stretched again.  In love

We’re using Jump In (Apologia).  I break the chapters/skills up for him.  I loooove this easy to edit printable calendar!  I just type in his assignments, print and wa-lah!  He has a writing schedule.  Typically he has writing M,W,F.

I mix computer and writing by having him do his assignments on the PC.

He’s starting a new PACE for History/Geography.

Plus, addicted to the History Channel’s The Story of Us!

I really can’t say enough about ACE’s grammar for Tobes.  It has done a world of good for him.  The constant review and simple instructions have been just the ticket for him.

He even told me that he enjoys diagraming sentences the other day!

We’re using ACE for his spelling too.  But I’m just ho-hum about it.  Next year I think I’m gonna try a combo of Apples and Wordly Wise.

I think it’s cute that he wrote “Mars” in red ink!  Did you know Mars is read because it’s rusty?  That’s our cool science fact of the week.  Smile

trevy's 4th birthday 006

He’s getting better all the time on the piano!

Not pictured but part of his school week:

Basketball.  He plays for the town team and our local CYO.

Reading.  He has a whole slew of Geronimo Stilten books that he’s tearing through.

Community Service.  He’s a buddy with our Special Olympics program.

French.  This isn’t an intensive program.  I’m using Great Commission Language’s Jr. French program.  We really just listen to the cd and work on the vocab together.  I try to listen daily during our opening exercises.

Character Training.  He’s part of a Bible Club that meets once a week at my parents’ church.

Gosh…that sounds like an awful lot.  But really it isn’t.  And some days are just CORE subjects only.

netflixing for history–Sophie Scholl

image

The Hubs and I snuggled up the other night to one of the best movies (possibly ever) we’ve seen in a while.  The story of Sophie Scholl is so gripping that we hardly noticed the subtitles.  Which are there because this is a German film.  Production is such a personal taste kinda thing.  But both my hubby and I thought this was extraordinarily well acted and produced.

A powerful story of faith in the midst of crisis.

If you’re studying WWII with your older children…I would highly recommend this movie as a piece of your curricula.

And if not…maybe it would make a good (after the kids are in bed) date night movie with your man.

It’s currently available via Netflix instant view.

I always recommend checking out movies at Plugged In and Christian Answers to make sure you’re comfy with the content before clicking play.

Netflix-ing for Education. Really?

Like most families, our budget can only expand so far.  Ya know.  With a budding athlete, a promising artist, and a multiple therapy needed kiddo in the house.  Who we also believe in feeding.  And clothing.  Modesty, people!

::wink::

Finding funding for cable tv just isn't gonna happen.  Also, we loathe having gobs of channels with zilcho value to sift through.

Which is why I adore Netflix!  It's cheaper and instant play!  Also, because I believe in helping other homeschooling mommies (and daddies, if they're out there) out...I'm going to keep a running list of Netflix-ing we've done or are doing.  I'll even try to link in when possible.  Just for you.

::smile::

Character Training

    Science
    • Mythbusters - the hubs and the 4th grader dig this one most
    • Meerkat Manor - the mommy and the 4th grader like cuddling up and watching the antics of The Whiskers family

      History
      • Liberty Kids - I love that both the 4th grader and the K-5er enjoyed this one

Reading (I'm a meanie and make him read the book first :)
        • Holes
        • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
        • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
        • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (in our que waiting release)

          Kindergarten-ish
          • WordWorld - this engages all three kids (even though the 4th grader will never admit it and the littlest only for one episode at most :)
          • SuperWhy - another wonderful PBS show
          • LeapFrog - new to the instant view options!  Hooray!

Preschool Basics (Too many to list them all!  I'm only listing the most popular for our family.  The easiest thing to do is open the Children & Family genre tab and choose the age group of your interest)
            • WonderPets
            • Backyardigans
            • Dora
            • Diego
            • Anything Sesame Street
            • Barney (the big kids not so much...but the littlest loves it.  And mommy is into anything that keeps the littles occupied for more than 2 minutes in a row)
            • Blue's Clues
            • I could go on and on and on...but I think this is a good place to pause and let you go flip through the options that'll fit your family!

            ********************

Yikes!  This post is making us sound like tv junkies.  We're really not.  Although nor are we a tv on weekends only family.  I try to make sure what they're watching is - A) wholesome and B) has educational value of some kind.  We allow them tv in the mornings while I'm prepping lunches and other miscellaneous morning madness.  Because I have learned my coffee works best when peacefully consumed.  Then when the two littlest get home from school I have initiated Rest Time.  Usually about an hour to an hour and a half in length.  This is when they get to Netflix.  I let them rotate choices.  Him - Her - Him  - Her.  She has been choosing Free Willy for a week straight now, but I just noticed Aneglina Ballerina is on instant demand so maybe today'll be something fresh and new!

I'll keep adding to my list as we find new choices...

              Happy Homeschooling!
