our favorite christmas apps

Christmas Countdown with Music

FREE

We have this app running year round!

There is a Star

FREE

I can’t say enough about how much I love this app!  The graphics are adorable.  The music is AH-mazing!  This is definitely a MUST HAVE!!!  And the best news is that it’s FREE for now!

My Nativity Scene

99 cents

Really cute way for the kids to celebrate Jesus during Christmas time.  My kiddos love sticker type apps where they can move things around and pick the scene.  This app also has a feature that allows them to take a picture of their masterpiece and save or email it.

The Children’s Bible:  Jesus is Born in Bethlehem

$4.99

The Nativity Story with beautiful graphics and music.  I found this when it was a freebie and we love it.  Although the price is steep.  But this is one to keep on your radar for when it goes on sale again.

Toca Hair Salon – Christmas Gift

FREE

We’re super huge fans of ANYTHING Toca Boca but this app is totally a fave!  Because who wouldn’t love shaving a Christmas tree or giving the jolly old guy a new do?!

Santa’s Big Helper: 9 Christmas Apps in 1

99 cents

This is a cute app that allows you to track Santa, count down to Christmas, read Elf reports and even ask a Elf a question.  Super cute.  I snagged it when it was free but 99 cents isn’t too pricey.  In love

Snow Wonder by Moms with Apps

FREE

Build your own snowman and make it snow!  This app starts by having your child choose hat, scarf and face for their snowman.  They are then prompted to hit the arrow key which moves them outside.  Once outside they can assemble their snowman.  Then tap around on the screen to make snow flakes fall.  Adorable and fun!

Christmas Carols for Kids, Sing Along Songs – Jolly Jingle Free

FREE

A cute and interactive way to sing favorite carols.  Touch the snowglobe to change your song selection.  Touch the music note to be taken to the song screen which is interactive.  You can even choose which rendition of the carol you’d like to hear.  My kiddos are music lovers so this is a big hit for us!

Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure

$2.99

If you have a Character addict in your house like I do in mine…this app is totally worth the cost!  Lots of interaction through out the game where you help Santa deliver the presents on time.  Cute.

Trevy app Loves

The iPad still remains by far the best therapeutic item we’ve purchased!

Unless you count the various safety gadgets.  In love

Here are some new apps that Trevy is diggin’…

  • Jesus Loves Me by Listener Records - Such a sweet app!  You can watch a cute little music video, play a memory matching game, listen to Bible verses or (Trevy’s fave) record yourself singing Jesus Loves Me with the animal friends!  It’s character training AND speech therapy!  And the best part of all – it’s FREE right now!

  • There is a Star by Listener Records LLC – Grab it while it’s FREE!  This is a beautiful nativity music video.  The graphics are so adorable and message so beautiful that I was literally welling up by the end!  But I’m a sappy-head sooooo…

  • Winnie the Pooh Wonder and Wander by Disney -  Another awesome FREEbie!  Trevy is addicted to characters and this app is just too much fun with our friend Tigger randomly bouncing around!  There is a matching game, puzzles and coloring pictures.  Super cute.

  • Toca Tailor Fairy Tales by Toca Boca – We are huuuuge fans of Toca Boca!  This app isn’t quite as simple as some of the others but it’s still lots of fun.  Bristel is definitely enjoying it the most because she’s a future fashion designer, donchya know!  Snap it up while it’s FREE!!

Just a handful of apps that we’re loving and learning with right now!  Be sure to subscribe to Digital Story Time's Daily Deals and Smart Apps for Kids…which is where I find lots of my fave freebie apps!

Plus, I share freebies as I find them on my Raising Little Rhodies facebook page!

in which we’re studying the states

With Games

We love love love our Scrambled States card game!  I’ll own up to not being much of a gamer…but even I have fun with this one!

The kids loved my homemade game.  I wrote the capitals on sticky notes and hid them around the house.  They then dashed to find them one at a time and match the correct capital to state.  If they made a match they could dash off to find another!

With Puzzles

We’ve had a giant USA Melissa & Doug floor puzzle forever.  Actually, it’s been shipped to Tanzania and back with us too!  Which means it smells kinda funky…but the kiddos have fun working on it together.  I love floor puzzles because all three of the kids can do them together!

With our iStuff

I created a USA folder on the iPad and filled it with fun stuff like:

Wood Puzzle USA Map ($1.99) – I think it’s worth the money!  It’s easy enough that even beginning readers can play and challenging enough that even my 6th Grader has fun with it.

Stack the States (.99) – one of our faves BUT it’s too difficult for my 2nd Grader to play alone.  Soooo…I fix that by scheduling time for them to play together.

License Plate Bingo (.99) – a great app to play while running errands or road tripping.

U.S. State Capitals! (FREE) – super simple and fun.  They give you the state and the capital is covered with a question mark.  Click the question mark to see if your answer was correct.

The iPad is awesome for just snuggling up on the couch and hunting YouTube for various clips of whichever state we’re investigating.

**be sure to like Raising Little Rhodies on FaceBook because I post educational apps I find when they’re free or super discounted.  All of our fave apps up there I got when they were free!**

With Music

Wakko’s 50 States song is our all time fave!

Tour the States is a close second!

With Writing

We were SO excited to join a 50 State postcard swap over the summer! As the postcards came in we would fill out the coordinating info in our USA coloring books (Target $1 bins).

1-IMG_2029

We made our own postcards to mail out. Staples was running a 50% off postcard sale so it was super cheap too!

the RI project 003

I decided to hole punch our postcards and keep them filed in an index card binder. Then I printed up these handy dandy flashcards. Just the front sides which I pasted onto the index cards. Once the kids have finished their workbooks I’m going to have them go through and add important info to the back of the index cards.

2-IMG_2030

The postcard swap was great except…

sadly, some of the people who joined didn’t send out their postcards in return.  We’re missing a handful and would love your help completing our 50 State postcard set!  We’ll send a RI one in return!  If you live in one of the following states and would like to help us out please leave your email in the comments and I’ll touch base with you.

States still needed:

Alaska

Arizona

Illinois

Indiana

Mississippi

Oregon

Pennsylvania

Texas

Rainbow Sentences (a TOS review)

Have I mentioned the mad crush I have on my iPad?

I love my iPad so much that I don’t even care that she’s an ancient first generation.  My love is unconditional like that.

It would only make sense that if I’m crushing on my iPad…I would also be a fan of apps.  I may or may not be known by my friends as an app hoarder.  I may or may not have jumped at the chance to review Rainbow Sentences by Mobile Education Tools.

Photobucket

The Deets

  • $7.99
  • Basic function is aimed at helping students put sentences together in grammatical order.  There are visual color coded cues, voice overs, rewards and other built in features.  You should really read the beautiful backstory too – especially if you have a child with special needs!
  • Settings page allows the teacher to add or remove features in order to target student’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Set up to use with multiple students.
  • Student can record and playback the sentence for added fun and skill boosting.
  • Student earns reward puzzle pieces to encourage continued learning through play.
  • Click me for more details.

The Review

I was pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed this app!

I appreciated that the Teacher functions were user friendly.  There’s nothing more irksome than not easily understanding how an app works!  I am not a read the instructions kinda girl and complicated apps drive me wonky.  I found Rainbow Sentences very easy to understand but they also have a handy dandy video tutorial just in case.

I love that you can have more than one student account!  I do wish that all the settings carried over though.  For instance, it didn’t take me long to realize my 1st Grader needed me to remove the color coding to give her added challenge.  My little guy needed the colors though.  It was a little annoying that I had to manually go in and change the settings every time I changed the user.

Because kids love being movie stars, here’s a little clip of my 1st Grader in action…

He favorite part was recording her own voice reading the sentences!  For both of my kiddos, that was just as good a prize as earning the puzzle pieces.

I especially love how Rainbow Sentences reinforces sentence structure for my little guy (who happens to have significant speech delay).  Extending and proper sentence structure are goals we’re focusing on in school, therapies and at home.  This app is a great fit for working on those targets!

Okay, so would I buy it is the real question, right?

Ugh. I’m torn here.  I’m such a fan of the freebie stuff out there.  And there are gobs of free apps.  The trouble with free apps is that you get what you pay for (most of the time).  I find a lot of the free apps aren’t nice and organized like Rainbow Sentences.  I’m also a fan of organization.  I really really liked most everything about this app.  We used it daily.  And I can see us continuing to use it.  It’s just that…

$7.99 is just a touch pricey for me.

Blushing here, over my cheap-skate ways.

I would definitely add it to my “wish list”.  I’m certainly going to forward the link to Trevy’s Speech Therapist.  I totally give Rainbow Sentences two thumbs up as far as content goes.  And if you aren’t stingy with your iTunes budget like me – I would say go for it.  But the truth is – I’d probably wait to buy it until it goes on sale.

And then I’d live happily ever after…constructing sentences and listening to playback with my new favorite app!

ABC desk (an iPad app review)

ABCDESK is not just super adorable it’s also educational and slightly addicting!

iPad Screenshot 1

It took me a beat to figure out that the little rings could be tugged to pull down more features or pushed to eliminate some of the screen clutter.

Actually, I’m pretty sure it was the kiddos that figured it out!

The graphics are sweet and I love how the toy box fills with a variety of items for curious fingers to explore.  It kept the kiddos entertained for several minutes in a row.  Which if you ask me is a win!

iPad Screenshot 2

There is a lesson creator as well.  I fiddled around with it but to be honest, I’m lazy.  And since we were having fun with the pre-made lessons I never really took advantage of that feature.

iPad Screenshot 5

Overall, we really enjoyed playing with ABCDESK.  It’s a great little app!

Available in iTunes for $2.99.

rhyming and phonics and other freebie apps

Rhyming Words by Grasshopper Apps is free today!  It may remain free but since my crystal ball is broken I’m adding the qualifier today.  This is my attempt to redirect any potential naysayers or critics.  In love

image

We’ve already played with it for a couple minutes and I looooove it!  It’s a great app to pair with the All About Reading Pre Level 1 program – which introduces the concept of rhyming.

Also free today…

ABC’s with Bingzy Bee: Phonics

image

The song is catchy and cute.  The games are a little advanced for Trevy…but that just means his sister gets to play teacher.  A role that she’s totally digs!

Our whole family’s  newest fave everybody’s gotta have it freebie app is…

Disneyland Explorer

image

There is nothing to not love about this one!  It’s kept the kiddos entertained for long stretches of minutes in a row!

Now Disney just needs to create one for Disney World too!

Kinderbach (a TOS review)

image

If you have a Kinesthetic (and aren’t they all really?) Learner in your home…

and you’ve been looking for a good foundational music curriculum that will help them really engage in the music making process.

Then Kinderbach might be exactly what you’re looking for!

By using catchy tunes and adorable characters, Kinderbach makes learning music fundamentals F-U-N!

Mommy Warning:

You may find yourself humming Dooooodi Doooooodi all the live long day! Winking smile

The Basics

  • Kinderbach offers programs for both classroom and home learning.  There are gobs of specials going on right now!  Hurry and check them out before the sales end!  In fact, click here to find a 40% Kinderbach at Home for new subscribers!
  • There are price points for just about everyone!  Including a free online trial.  Other price packages include online lessons for just $19.99 a month!  Or buy a whole year of online memberships for $95.98.  You can also purchase dvd sets if that’s more your style.  Right now ALL the dvd sets are on sale!
  • Kinderbach’s curriculum is aligned with MENC National Standards for Pre-K (but don’t let the pre-K fool you, this is really really terrific for any child that has never had foundational music training!) with learning that will translate to any instrument the child is drawn to in the future!
  • Lessons include music vocab, learning to read notes, rhythm , physical technique, “do re me” singing, listening skills, music composition and most important FUN!
  • Click here to read each level’s scope and sequence broken down for easy to digest decision making.
  • And some of my favorite news – Kinderbach Level 1 is now compatible for iPad-ing!

Photobucket

So maybe you’re less interested in the details and more interested in our experience?

Our Test Drive

Right from the first lesson my two youngest were totally engrossed!

Apologies for Trevy in his skivvies.  It’s a potty training thing! In love  They must have watched this “Hi-Lo” video a gazillion times!

Both of my Littles fell in love with the characters!  And loved the coordinating coloring sheets.

I love that the program is iPad friendly (this is NEW) because having the iPad right at the piano works perfectly for us!  I know the company is looking into developing an app.  For me…this can’t happen soon enough!

kinderbach 001

(colored letters are from a different Special Needs music curriculum Grams is working on with Trevy)

I really really really love everything about Kinderbach!  It’s just so wonderful on so many levels.  I would highly recommend it to any one!  Especially, to my fellow Special Needs mommies and daddies out there.  It is SO musically rich and visual that it’s the perfect fit for families who can’t afford traditional music therapy or classes for their kiddos!

image

There were really only two things that I would critique.

1)  The voice over was often drowned out by the piano.  We had trouble hearing the words at times.  Of course, you can download or purchase the song book to help.  But in a perfect world, you wouldn’t have to.

and

2)  The very first time we used our account we were locked out.  I emailed support and received a response immediately.  Evidently, there is a limit to the number of IP addresses allowed per account.  I believe they did open the restriction because it prevented me from being able to use my PC and my iPad.  That was a little annoying.  And while I do understand their desire for account users to not share info with 30 of their closest friends (which would be stealing!), at the same time, part of the beauty of online curriculums is being able to access them anywhere we go or from any of our devices.  Most homes today have multiple devices (PC, iPad, iPod, laptop, etc).  And most homeschoolers will go to Grams’ house every now and then and might want to Kinderbach for her too!

But even with my two critiques…I am still in love with Kinderbach!  And so thankful that we were given a chance to review this program!

…danielle

**This is my little place to disclaim, as part of the TOS Crew, I was given a sample of Kinderbach’s online curriculum in exchange for my honest and timely review.  All thoughts expressed are my own.  I received no other compensation.**

app(s) of the day

FREE today and works for both the iPad and iPod!  I can’t say enough great things about this app!  I’m working on Bristel and Trevy with learning our phone numbers and this app is just the perfect fit!  One of the best perks is that you can record little messages so they feel like they’re talking to you.  What little one isn’t over the moon for recorded love notes from daddy while he’s at work?!

FREE today!  Only iPad.  This is the PERFECT Geography app!

is FREE today!  Only iPad friendly.  A great little app for the science geek or budding artist in your house.  Also, a cool supplement if you’re studying the stars with Apologia as they explore colors a bit too.

FREE today!  Compatible with iPad and Pod.  Cause even virtual legos are fun.  Smile

FREE today!  Works on iPad and Pod.  I’m a sucker for anything Montessori and I have to say this app is SOOOOO great!  Especially, for Trevy who doesn’t catch on to counting things easily.  Counting is Montessori-fied which makes it easier to digest.  In love

FREE today.  Works with iPad and Pod.  I have been WAITING for this app for, like, ever!  Trevy is a YouTube-ing fool.  But somehow he always finds disturbing videos.  I mean, seriously, people…do we really need to see Barney killing Dora?!  Sheesh!  Gube solves that!  Only safe YouTube videos are accessible!  The only downside is Trevy loooooves watching videos of himself and they’re not Gube approved.  But other than that…this app is PERFECT!

Enjoy your Pad!

Trevy’s January (tot school) Trays

I try (don’t miss the key word: try)  to spend 30 minutes daily working with Trevy.  Using the Montessori inspired trays has become the easiest way for me to stay consistent.  But the whole point is just to spend a little time working with your munchkin in whatever way works for you!  I just like to share what we’re doing to hopefully idea inspire other mommies of Special Kiddos.  One of the best idea resources is to observe and ask the therapists who work with your child for “homework”.

Sensory Tray

We always try (there’s that word again: try) to start with a sensory activity.  Don’t ask me which one, cause I couldn’t tell ya…but I remember reading a book which philosophized that sensory activities “wake up the brain”.  I have no idea if it’s really true, but I bought into the idea.

:: smile ::

There are all kinds of wonderful sensory bin ideas out there!  I’m gonna steal this idea to put the bin on a big blanket – makes for easier clean up!  In our January bin you’ll find:  Cotton Balls; Snowflakes – since Trevy is loving any thing alphabet-y right now, I added letters to the backs; White Wintery Erasers –recycled from our Christmas bin; Clothes Pins – wonderful for fine motor work!  For now I’m just letting Trevy pick up what he wants how he wants.  Towards the end of the month I hope to move into more organized clothes pinning.  Ex: Trevy, find the letter A. etc.

Pre-Reading Tray

Trevy spied a Hooked on Phonics kit that I had purchased for Bristel aaaaages ago.  He LOVES it!  So in the trays it goes!

I’m crossing fingers that I get chosen to review All About Reading.  It’ll be added to this tray if I do!

Music Tray

Everybody knows that music is good for the soul!  It’s good for learning too!  Especially, for children with neurological issues.  Or missing left hemispheres.

:: wink ::

Trevy adores his Christmas cd player.  My goal for this tray is to start teaching him how to properly handle discs.  He’s already a pro at pushing all the buttons.  But if I can teach him how to change cds without destroying them, my life will be SO much easier!

Like Skills Tray

image

Learning how to dress for the weather with a great book and a felt friend!

Physical Therapy Tray

Another recycled goodie.  The kids looooooved the Christmas movement flashcards SO much – we’re using them again!

Speech Therapy Tray

We always start with an oral motor workout.  This is where I fully disclose, I am NOT (currently) trained in oral motor activities.  These are just little tricks that I have observed “real” therapists using, or have read about during my wee hours of the night info surfing and put into practice in a non-certified-home-grown method.  My goal is to wake up all the muscles of his mouth prior to starting our speech therapy homework.  Trevy loves whistles of any kind, but especially those little whistle lips!

Our outpatient Speech Therapist gives us photocopies of flashcards she is currently working on with Trevy which I keep in his PECs binder which lives in his Speech Therapy Tray.

Here’s a cute little video of us Speech Therapy-ing…

One of my favorite Speech Therapy online resources is Mommy Speech Therapy.  Lots of great stuff to read and even free worksheets to help guide your work at home!  Oh…and she also developed my fave speech therapy app – Articulation Station.

Letter Recognition/Phonics Tray

Trevy knows most of the letters of the alphabet.  We’re beginning to work on sounds now.  And I found this most adorable little snowman game to use in our Letters Trays!  Rather than having Trevy color in the squares, I’m having him place the Upper/Lower Case A or B on the appropriate square.  I just use the Leapfrog classic “the A says ahhh…every letter makes a sound…” to reinforce the phonics.

Fine Motor (n’ Math) Tray

Another super cute printable (from PreKinders my newest fave Trevy teaching resource).  Even better that it includes a yummy snack!  Trevy was too busy eating the Fruit Loops to count or graph them.  We’ll get there though!

image

I always try to find ways for Bristel to be involved.  She looooves getting her crafty on.  And actually, has pretty fantastic ideas!  Like in the photo album above you’ll see she added “snow” and even “frosty” to the picture!  I keep telling her she’s either gonna grow up to be a teacher or a therapist.

Number Recognition and Counting Tray

Trevy can now count to 10 successfully (most of the time).  I’m just using an old Abeka Button Bear workbook to reinforce what he’s learning at school.  Nothin’ fancy.  But he does love coloring!

Hoping you have fun working with your little one this month!  And be sure to check out the link below for other great ideas!

iPad mommies: how to upload files

Another blogger mom had a brilliant idea to upload a PDF teacher’s manual to her iPad.  Save the trees!

I was in L-O-V-E with the idea.

Mostly because we’re all about saving the ink cartridge.  But I like saving trees too.  In love

Just one teensie weensie problem.

I have (or had, rather) no idea how to upload a PDF to my Pad!

Thank goodness for geeky friends!  Who can share wonderful tools like Dropbox.com with me!  It’s free.  It’s easy to use.  It’s has a free app sidekick.  And I’m in love!

Hope it helps another iPad mommy (or daddy) today!
