the Kinderbach app is live!

KB app

  If I loved Kinderbach online

(which I did!)

then you can consider me over the moon for the Kinderbach app!

The first two weeks of lessons are FREE!  Which means you can take it for a test drive to see if you love it as much as we do!  I have no doubt you will!

Enjoy your Pad,

target: recognizing family

I have a bad habit.

I print things out.  With the best of intentions.

The get stacked neatly on my desk.  Other paper work gets stacked neatly on top of that.  Before long, my pile is too big to manage so I hide it in a drawer.  Where I promptly forget all about my good intentions (among other things lost in the paperwork abyss).  Eventually, I’ll get around to cranky-cleaning stuff out.  Clutter makes me cranky.

Which is how I stumbled across one of the most adorable (and FREE) printable mini-books.  Evah!

Daddy, Daddy

Who Do You See?

by Katie Yeh of www.playingwithwords365.com

Otherwise known as my fave Speech Therapy website.  In love

  daddy daddy book 001

I had printed it out who knows when ago.  And then stacked, stashed, and forgot all about it.  Until I could take the stuffed drawers no more and found it again!

daddy daddy book 002

I am trying to change my forgetful (thyroid brain) ways.  So this time, I promised myself I was actually going to put it together!  I kept moving it to the top of the stack until I finally put it together!

Aren’t you proud of me?

daddy daddy book 003

I even got a little creative and added our own faces to the pre-made figures.

But only because I knew it would make Trevy giggle.  His giggle is my addiction.  Truth be told though, it made Bristel and me giggle as we glued them together too!

daddy daddy book 004

I also laminated the pages and people (using painter’s tape to make them moveable).  But again, you don’t have to.

I’m just one a those crazy home school mommies…I laminate everything. Smile

Trevy is very into books and his family right now.  One of his ABA targets is family members.  He has mommy and daddy down pat.  Brother and sister…not so much.  Which is cute…buuuut…  I’m predicting we’ll use this book quite a bit over the next few weeks.

In fact, I can’t wait for him to come home from school so we can snuggle up and read it together!

And of course, I had to share this sweet little book just in case you have a little one who is working on recognizing family members too!

gifted hands on netflix instant stream

If you know anything about Trevy’s story…then you won’t be surprized to learn that Gifted Hands is on our family’s must watch list.  Although Dr. Carson is not an advocate for Infantile Spasms and Hemispherectomies…his work blazed an extraordinary trail.  Down which our family would eventually tread.

And you have no idea how excited I was seeing it nestled among the other newly added instant stream options on Netflix!

If you haven’t watched it and you have even a smithereen of interest…

I say go pop some corn.  And snuggle in.  After all, it’s summer tv season.  What else is there worth watching right now?!

my top 10 homeschool must haves

Grace

I’m stealing this one from Angie over at My Little Blessings…but that’s only because she summed up the biggie for me.  It’s not uncommon to find myself trying so hard to make it through some days (weeks…months) on sheer will power and grit.  I am ever learning that my strength only gets me so far.  And typically…not in a very pleasant mood either.  I need to be reminded often that I need Him.  His strength.  His Grace.  His peace.  Permeating every corner of our home(school).  Because my choice to keep them home isn’t only about the education piece.  I need to remember that His Grace is front and center of my top ten homeschool essentials.

Especially around this time of year…when the doubts begin to creep in.

Or whatever homeschool organizer that works best for you.  You need a system of some kind to help you stay on track.  I found Homeschool Tracker last year and have been a groupie ever since.  I even wrote a whole post about how much I love this tool!

image
(screen shot of our attendance)

It’s easy to use, flexible and best of all – the basic edition is FREE!

And added bonus is totally impressing the socks off your hubby by showing him some of the wonderful printable reports!

iPad

There is no denying I have a mad crush on my iPad.  There are just so many ways to use it!  Apps, of course.  I have a running list of my app loves here.  I also try to post any time I hear about freebies or discover a worth buying app.  (Hint:  Click me to subscribe to RLR)

I uploaded our French discs to iTunes and now it’s easy peasy to work on our French lessons during morning meetings.  Click play.  I never attend a morning meeting without our iPad!

Or how about setting up YouTube playlists for each day of the week.  Example…each Friday we’re studying our 50 States.  I have several different songs in our Friday playlist.  Our favorite is the Animaniacs version!

Yep, our iPad has become an essential.

Painter’s Tape

I live by the stuff!

It allows me to stick things on the walls, files, binders…whatever.  And because I have commitment issues…I can rest easy knowing if when I change my mind it’s no worries because Painter’s Tape won’t damage (most) surfaces!

The Library

One of my favorite memories from this year (and I have thyroid brain sooo…) is Bristel walking into a post on our way out of the library.  She didn’t get hurt.  And we both giggled about how she didn’t see the post because her nose was already buried in a book!

I looooved that moment for a couple reasons.  1)  Reading hasn’t come easy for her and seeing her fully engaged made my heart smile and 2) I taught her to read!

The best part about the library (IMO) is that most things can now be done virtually!  I can request books.  I’ve been surprised at some of the resources they have access to.  Our library has quite a lot of home school resources.  Story of the World on cd, for instance.  Plus, my late fees have drastically decreased now that I can renew online too!

A Pinterest Account

Pinterest Favicon
I know Pinterest gets a bad rap for being addictive.  Rightfully so, I’m afraid.  BUT.  I can’t tell you how handy it can be to organize and file ideas!  I have several boards that are dedicated just to homeschooling.  Want to peek at Toby’s curriculum for next year (6th)?  Click here.  Are you Exploring Anatomy?  Peek at some great projects I’ve pinned.  Looking for some ideas to spice up your school room?  I have a board just for that!

If you need an invite just leave me your email in the comments section and I’ll send one over!

Binders, Binders and more Binders

I use them for any and everything!  There is no such things as too many.  I like them in all sizes and colors!  In love

I also collect all things binder-related.  Folders.  Separators.  Etc.

Support

I love the virtual support I get from my online friends…

but…

there is just something special about a girlfriend to grab a coffee with.  Or dinner.  Or just chat with before church (Jen).  About home school-y stuff.

I am SO thankful to have a handful of girlfriends (one in particular, JEN!) that are my sounding board and encouragers!  I need them!

White Boards

Just like binders…I don’t believe there are ever too many!  I have two big ones mounted in our “school/therapy” room.  Plus, a handful of little ones that come in SO handy for a variety of things!  Practicing penmanship…or spelling words…or just random drawing.  We use them daily.

Netflix

I feel so shallow listing Netflix last buuuuuut.  We love Netflix!  I let the kiddos watch for an hour each day while Trevy is napping.  I like to call it “rest” time.  It’s when I try and get grading done and prepped for the next day.  Or sometimes I actually rest!  They get to choose from our instant que where I’ve placed Mom Approved options.  Their current fave is Kate Plus Eight.  I was impressed this morning when Bristel knew that a Kiwi is a bird.  She learned that from a recent Kate Plus Eight episode.

Visit this link to share your top ten and/or read what others consider their top ten homeschooling essentials!

free iPad apps of the day

At the time of this posting these apps are listed as free.  As always, prices are subject to change.  So hurry up and snag them!

Pepi Play is an OMGosh you NEED this app!  Especially if your little one looooves My Play Home or the Toca Boca apps.
Four different play scenes include potty, brushing teeth, laundry and bath time.

Rocket Speller is fun for littles that like puzzles!

Enjoy your Pad!

Dressing Skills (a Your Therapy Source review)

Independence.

My goal for Trevy in all things.

With Toby and Bristel, I didn’t have to actually teach them how to dress and undress.  The just learned how on their own.  Their little bodies have always obeyed their little whims.  And maybe Trevy would (in his own time) learn how to dress himself too?  But part of my role as his mommy and cheerleader is helping him along.  In practical ways.  By studying his abilities and areas that need more guidance. I know that he struggles with motor planning, for instance.  Meaning, he might know what he wants to do but he can’t quite figure out how to make his body do it.  His brain and his body aren’t in sync all the time.

Which is why I loved the idea of this Dressing Skills e-book (just $4.99) by Your Therapy Source!

From their website:

Summary:
Dressing Skills
is a 24 page booklet that provides visual directions of how to:

  • put on a shirt
  • put on pants in standing
  • put on pants in sitting
  • put on a coat
  • put on a coat with the flip method.

The pictures and step by step directions are either 3" by 5" images or 2" by 2" images.  Using task analysis, each dressing skill has been broken down into simple steps.  Create visual sequences for the children to follow along each step of the task.  Also included is a tip sheet on how to teach dressing and a small book to read entitled "I Can Dress Myself".

Lots of practical step x step tips  for mommy (or daddy or grandma or…).  Ideas that help me understand how to help him motor plan.  Can you believe I didn’t really know that developmentally children learn how to strip before they learn how to dress?  I mean, I certainly remember how frustrating it was to keep my 2 year old daughter in a stitch of clothing.  But it never occurred to me that she was instinctively developmentally moving towards self dressing.

Click me to download sample pages from the book.

Trevy's March Trays 014

Also included in the e-book is this adorable little mini-book printable. If you have a Bristel (crafty sibling), it’s a great way to incorporate them too!  Bristel did all the cutting and pasting plus the wording is SO easy that she can read the book to her brother!  She loves anything involving playing teacher.  He loves anything involving her playing with him!  In love

I have a Dressing Skills tray in his trays right now!  Using a doll to practice dressing skills on was a fabulous tip from the book!

Trevy's March Trays 013

The best news is that Trevy is making progress!  He can’t dress himself entirely independently yet…but he’s getting there!

I definitely recommend the Dressing Skills e-book to any parents who are working towards independent dressing!

American Girl Celebration at Barnes & Noble this Friday

bristel's birthday and more 009

We made a BIG deal out of her first American Girl experience.  On her 6th birthday (she’s 7 now) we trekked to the American Girl Doll store in Boston.

bristel's birthday and more 012
It was SO fun!
She picked Kanani because who doesn’t love that beautiful hair?!  Which btw is super hard to keep beautiful!  (sigh)

She’s in a “take Kanani with me everywhere” phase.  Which is why I’m so excited that our local Barnes & Noble is hosting an American Girl Celebration this Friday night!

so you didn’t think kinderbach could get any better?

image

It was a HUGE blessing to review Kinderbach earlier this year with the TOS Crew.

I fell head over heels in love with the program!

Know what else I’m head over heels for?

My iPad, of course!

And I’m super excited to share that I have had the privilege of being on the Beta Tester Team for Kinderbach’s app!  It has been a cool experience just learning a little about the app building process.  But even more than that…

it’s exciting to have access to all that Kinderbach online offers right on my tablet!  Because everyone knows that piano lessons are way more fun snuggled on the couch with the iPad center stage!

For me, one of the most wonderful things about an app verison of Kinderbach is that it becomes completely Trevy friendly.  Trevy was diagnosed with catastrophic epilepsy at 7 months old and at 2 1/2 he had the majority of his left hemisphere removed (read more about his story here).  As a result he has significant delays and is unable to use a typical mouse.  But he’s a touch interface jedi master!  Having Kinderbach on the iPad makes a HUGE difference in his ability to enjoy and learn from the program!  Which in turn makes for a sappy, smiley mommy.

I can’t wait for the Kinderbach app to be fully released (word on the street is sometime this month!)!

…danielle

**Disclaimer** I was given special partial access to the Kinderbach app during the build process in exchange for my honest and timely review on my blog.  All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.  I received no other compensation.**

I’m super excited about a new children’s consignment store that’s opening in our community!

I love that it’s practically within walking distance.

And I double love that I’m friends with the owners and think they’re some of the sweetest people I know!

If you’re a local yokel be sure to check out Tiverton Tots

to crazy and back (in the swing) again (a picture marathon)

We decided to be crazy and visit Mickey Mouse again.

Disney 2012 007

Disney 2012 182

Then we decided to be REALLY crazy and pile into our Highlander for the 22 hour (if you go straight through) journey from coastal RI to sunny FL.

Disney 2012 033

(Mulan gave Trevy a juicy forehead kiss to carry with him)

Disney 2012 035

Trevy did AH-mazing!  Which is not to say that there weren’t any pinching, kicking, hitting, throwing, screaming, slapping, biting and/or licking episodes along the way.  We’re thoroughly convinced that we really need to upgrade to a mini-van.  With bucket seats.  And maybe a built in straight jacket.  To protect poor Toby who took the brunt of Trevy’s wrath on the ride.  But overall, he did much better driving than our last trip by air!

Disney 2012 003

(with Uncle Byron at Cracker Barrel in Richmond, VA)

Even so…

Disney 2012 043

we’re exhausted.  And finding it hard to get back into the swing of things.

I know it’s totally cliché…

but seriously…
